Basic Information About Burkina Faso:

Population: The population of Burkina Faso is 18,855,832.

GDP:  $29.3 billion (2016)

Climate:  Burkina Faso has four seasons.  The dry and cool season from mid-November to mid-February, with temperatures dropping to about 60 °F (16 °C) at night; a hot season from mid-February to June, when maximum temperatures rise into the low 100s F (about 40 °C) in the shade and the harmattan—a hot, dry, dust-laden wind blowing off the Sahara desert—is prevalent; a rainy season, which lasts from June to September; and an intermediate season, which lasts from September until mid-November. 

People:  More than 60 ethnic groups live in Burkina Faso, speaking a variety of different languages and dialects. The Mossi are the largest group and make up half the population. The Fulani are the second largest, forming around 8% of the population.  French is the official language and widely spoken in the towns and cities. 

Religion:  Approximately 55% to 60% of the populatio n practice Islam, about 15% to 20% practice Roman Catholicism, and approximately 5% are Protestant. It is believed that a majority of the population also includes traditional indigenous elements within their religious practice.

Capital:  Ouagadougou is the capital of Burkina Faso and is also the country’s largest city. The city’s name is often shortened to Ouaga.

Language:  Burkina Faso is a multilingual country. An estimated 70 languages are spoken there, of which about 66 are indigenous. The Mossi language (Mossi: Mòoré) is spoken by about 40% of the population, mainly in the central region around the capital, Ouagadougou. French is the official language.

Currency:  The CFA Franc is the currency of Communauté Financière Africaine (BCEAO).

Safety Concerns: Benin is considered one of the most stable democratic country in Africa.    Crime such as armed robbery, carjackings and other petty crimes are on the rise especially in the area bordering Nigeria.  Exercise caution and be vigilant.Things to do and see in Benin:
