Basic Information About Liberia:

Population: The population of Liberia is 4,662,568.

GDP:  $3.7 billion (2016)

Climate:  Liberia has a tropical climate, which means that it is hot and humid year-round and gets plenty of rain. Temperatures in Monrovia and along the Liberian coast generally range between 73°F and 89°F (23°C and 32°C) and it is slightly hotter inland. In Liberia the climate is tropical, hot and humid all year round, with a rainy season from May to October, due to the African monsoon, and pretty frequent rains in other months, except in the short dry season that runs from December to February, which is more marked in the north.

People:  There are officially 16 ethnic groups that make up Liberia’s indigenous African population, making up maybe 95% of the total: Kpelle, the largest group; Bassa, Gio, Kru, often fishermen; Grebo, Mandingo, often in trade and transport; Mano, Krahn, Gola, Gbandi, Loma, Kissi, Vai,Belleh,Mende and Dey. 

Religion:  85.5% of Liberia’s population practices Christianity. Muslims comprise 12.2% of the population, largely coming from the Mandingo and Vai ethnic groups. The vast majority of Muslims are Malikite Sunni, with sizeable Shia and Ahmadiyya minorities.

Capital:  Monrovia is the capital of Liberia. 

 

Language:  Liberia is a multilingual country where more than thirty languages are spoken. English is the official language. None of the languages group forms a distinctive majority. These languages can be grouped in four language families: Mande, Kru, Mel, and the divergent language Gola.

Currency:  The Liberian Dollar is the currency of Liberia.
