Climate: The climate is typical of an arid or semiarid steppe, with cold winters and dry summers. The mountain regions of the northeast are subarctic with dry and cold winters. Hot season / summer are in April, May, June, July, August and September. Most rainfall (rainy season) is seen in November. Dry periods are April, May, June, July, August, September and October.
People: Pashtun (Pashto) 42%, Tajik 27%, Uzbek 9%, Hazara 8%, Aimaq 4%, Turkmen 3%, Balochi (Baluch) 2% and Other Groups 5%.
Religion: Islam is the religion of more than 99% of Afghanistan’s citizens. An estimated 80–90% of the population practice Sunni Islam and belong to the Hanafi Islamic law school, while 7–19% are Shia; the majority of the Shia follow the Twelve branch, with smaller numbers of Ismailis. The remaining 1% or less practices other religions such as Sikhism and Hinduism.
