Basic Information About Azerbaijan:

So I packed my backpack and off to my next adventure, this time to Hoi An, Vietnam. Hoi An is a combo of tradition and modern, foreign and local, bold yet reserved.  If you are confused with what I just said, then don’t worry because I was confused with Hoi An too.  The more I explored, the more I got beguiled.  Hoi An is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in an effort to preserve the typical architecture reminiscent of the bygone era, I couldn’t have resisted coming to this place while being in Vietnam.

Population: The population of Azerbaijan is 9,920,792.

GDP:  $ 165.3 billion (2016)

Climate:  The climate of Azerbaijan can be described as continental influenced climate with warm summer and very cold, dry winters. It can be divided in three different climate zones; one north of the mountainous regions, one south of them, and along the coast of the Caspian Sea. The warm season lasts from June 6 to September 12 with an average daily high temperature above 27°C. The hottest day of the year is August 5, with an average high of 32°C and low of 23°C. The cold season lasts from November 28 to March 26 with an average daily high temperature below 12°C. The coldest day of the year is February 3, with an average low of 2°C and high of 7°C.

People: The modern ethnonym “Azerbaijani” or “Azeri” refers to the Turkic peoples of Iranian Azerbaijan and Republic of Azerbaijan, who historically called themselves or were referred to by others as Muslims, Turks, Turkmens, Persians, or Ajams (by Kurds), and religious identification prevailed over ethnic identification.

Religion:  Islam is the main religion of Azerbaijan. 99.2% of the country’s population are Muslims. About 85% of Azerbaijani Muslims profess Shia Islam while 15% are Sunni Muslims.

Capital:  Baku is the capital of Azerbaijan.

Language: Azerbaijani is the state official language.

Currency:  The Azerbaijani New Manat is the currency of Azerbaijan.

Time Zone: Azerbaijan Time (Standard Time) currently has same time zone offset as AZT (UTC +4) but different time zone name. Azerbaijan Time (AZT) is 4 hours ahead of Coordinated Universal Time (UTC).
