The first settlers in Anguilla were by the Indigenous tribes who migrated from South America dating back to around 1300. Christopher Columbus discovered Anguilla in 1493, and the British colonized the island in 1825. Britain then granted Saint Kitts and Nevis full internal autonomy and also incorporated the island into the new unified dependency, named Saint Christopher-Nevis-Anguilla. British authority was later restored in July 1971 and in 1980 Anguilla was finally allowed to secede from Saint Kitts and Nevis and become a separate British Crown Colony. Anguilla has become popular because it provides a tax shelter, having no capital gains, estate, profit or other forms of direct taxation on either individuals or corporations.
Climate: Anguilla features a tropical wet and dry climate. July to October is its hottest period, while December to February is the coolest. The best time to visit is December to May before and after the hurricane season.
